1049 Market Street is a seven-story, 83-unit building located between Sixth and Seventh streets in San Francisco, CA. There are about 100 tenants, mostly artists, who reside in these live-work spaces. Units vary in size and rent, with the residents typically paying less than or around $1000 a month.
“But now, just as their gritty Mid-Market neighborhood transforms under the influx of tech companies and new high-rise housing, dozens of tenants in this artist colony face eviction. They say the potential large-scale displacement illustrates the gentrification of a city in danger of losing the creative energy that feeds its vibrancy.” - Carolyn Said, SFGATE
On September 13, 2013 the tenants received a 60-day eviction notice.
On November 12, 2013 the tenants held a protest.
